Should Psychics Get Paid I belong to a number of paranormal and tarot-related groups on MySpace. A few years ago, I got into a little bit of an argument in one of the groups about the ethics of accepting money for doing psychic readings. We got into whether a psychic should take money for doing readings, and if they are going against the will of the higher being if they become rich because of it. I, personally, don't see anything wrong with it. Other people get paid and paid well for utilizing their gifts. Why should a psychic be any different? Dancers get paid for dancing. Teachers get paid for teaching. Actors get paid for acting. Athletes get paid for playing their sport. Singers get paid for singing. Doctors get paid for practicing medicine. All of these people expand upon their natural-born abilities through education and practice. Sure, you can still sing or dance or write or play sports without that further study, but when was the last time you saw a doctor without seeing his degree hanging on the wall? And, for the most part, those singers, dancers, writers and athletes who have not studied and practiced are not doing it for a living, simply as a loved hobby. A genuine psychic will also expand upon their natural-born gifts through education and practice. We, like all of these other professionals, are not simply content to accept what is given to us with no further study. We take classes, attend seminars, buy informational books and CD’s, and practice, practice, practice. And, like those singers, dancers, athletes, doctors and so on, should we not be fairly compensated for it? On a personal note, I studied and practiced for seven years before I ever charged for a reading. Is that not the equivalent of the amount of time it takes to get a Master’s Degree? Several people said that if all you accept is enough money to survive, that's ok. But the minute you start to make a lot of money, it's going against nature. I agree with that to a certain extent, although something above mere subsistence level would be better. Greed has no place in my world, however, who am I to tell someone else what they should charge? Why shouldn't a psychic seek more? As long as your gift is genuine, and you're honest with your dealings, why should you not seek however much you want? Why settle for mere survival when you could be comfortable? For many years, I did my tarot and psychic readings for free, because I didn’t feel as if I’d attained a high enough level of expertise yet. Now that I have, and I do charge for them, are the readings any less valuable to those who want them than before? Am I a bad person for choosing this as my living so that I can have a place to lay my head at night? I don’t believe I am. |
